Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, has intervened in the escalating diplomatic tensions following Pope Francis' remarks on negotiating peace in Ukraine and the scandal about the "white flag".
In an interview with Italy's il Corriere della Sera, Parolin addressed concerns raised after the Pontiff's recent statements advocating for negotiations rather than surrender.
"In this context, it's evident that creating such conditions is not the sole responsibility of one party but rather both, with the primary condition being an end to aggression," Parolin emphasized.
Speaking on the importance of negotiation, Parolin echoed the Pope's sentiments, highlighting that it is not a sign of weakness but rather a display of courage.
"The Holy See continues to advocate for a ceasefire, with cessation of hostilities primarily incumbent upon the aggressors, followed by the initiation of negotiations," he stated in the interview published on March 12.
Furthermore, Parolin expressed optimism regarding the possibility of a diplomatic resolution, asserting that human decisions ultimately dictate the course of action.
"The war unleashed against Ukraine is not the result of an uncontrollable natural disaster but rather human freedom. As such, it is within human capability and responsibility to take steps toward a diplomatic solution," he emphasized.
Addressing concerns over potential escalation, Parolin underscored the Vatican's apprehension, warning against further intensification of the conflict.
"The Vatican is apprehensive about the risk of escalating warfare. Any escalation would bring about additional suffering, loss, and destruction, compounding the already heavy toll exacted on the Ukrainian people, particularly children, women, the elderly, and civilians," he concluded.
